Screen Wall Wrap-up - 09/19/2017

I've made some decent progress over the last 2 weekends wrapping up my screen wall.

I don't have pictures of the white spandex up because I had a wrinkle and a tiny bit of dirt I had to take care of before I could take a shot of it. 120" white spandex came from spandex world and even though they said they don't roll 120" material they said they would make an exception for me and fold the 120" once to make a 60" tall sheet then wrap it. The fold created one crease the easily steamed out, however, the crease also created an edge that could easily pickup a tiny bit of dirt in the shipping tube and that's what happened to a couple of inches across the screen. Luckily I'm decently talented at stain removal and after spritzing, blotting, and vacuuming I was able to get it all off. Can't even tell where it used to be.

Next I started the final design of my screen surround blackout panels. As you can see, the room has crown molding. Keeping with the removable theme of this theater I've planned in advance to build around them. It just required some careful measurements and cuts:

Very happy with the results. Just beat from the work that went into it. First thing my 3 year old did when she walked in was make a move to touch the screen. Stopped her in time and we had a conversation about how touching the screen is off limits... We'll see how that holds up. I actually had nightmares of our cat climbing the screen last night  Definitely going to have to change out the knob on the door to something with a key I can lock.

I've currently got my Onkyo HT-R670 apart to replace a few capacitors on my HDMI board as a preventative measure. I'm also modifying the headphone port to switch on, on command (IR relay) so I can toggle a stereo downmix to the headphone port which runs out to 2 parallel 1x4 headphone amps whose outputs and adjustment pots will eventually make their way to each seat.

After the AVR is finished up I'll start installing it. In the meantime I'll also be working on:

  • Building 2 speaker stands for the center and left front channels
  • Modifying the rack cubby's rear door that I built 2 weeks ago (built too wide because I don't know a fudging thing about cabinet doors) and hanging it.
  • Painting. The screen and surround panels have to come back down to paint a few choice parts of the room. Namely the right front channel cubby and trim on the left side of the room.
  • Installing my electronics in my rack and getting the setup on its feet.
  • Finalizing the aim of the projector. I've already roughly aimed it 2 weeks ago because the wife begged me to put something up on the screen but it's got a ways to being perfect.

After that I should have something I can play around with. The goal is to finish the above before my other daughter's 1st birthday on October 14th, and honestly I really want to knock it out over the next 2 weeks, so the crunch is on. Now that I'm done with a vehicle I've been working on, on the week days I'll also have ~1hr each night to work on the theater so things should move a little quicker now.
