After being parked for 19 months while higher priority projects moved through the queue, I was finally able to get back to the 540i in August of 2021 to start the overhaul. Here's what got done tonight:
- Jacked up car
- Removed frontmost underbody shield
- Drained coolant + oil + trans oil. Coolant engine plugs are torqued pretty well. Oil plug needs to be re-torqued.
- Removed air intake ram air pipe that runs horizontally across the front of the bumper and into the passenger side airbox. It uses 3 screws. The machine screw goes on the far passenger side.
- Removed headlights. Headlights have 4 screws in them. Two on the top, and two on the bottom
- Removed the front most radiator guard. This is a piece that also facilitates a duct to the front bumper mount. It has 3 screws. Two on the drivers side, and one on the passenger. It also utilizes a plastic clip connector that holds the radiator power wiring to support this guard. Finally, 3 plastic clip connectors secure the top of this guard
- Sprayed penetrating oil on the exhaust nuts
