One thing that surprised me when I first bought and drove my 540i was how sloppy the shifter was. Moving in and out of the gates was ok, but the return-to center was basically non-existent and I could slap the shift lever from left to right with zero effort. To try and resolve this I ordered a short shifter kit from ECSTuning. It included a shorter e60 shift lever, a lever bearing, teflon shifter bushings, a carrier pin, and a 6 speed ZHP knob.
I installed everything except the shifter bushings and the carrier pin in 2017 (because the bushings and carrier pin required a much harder install) and only noticed a slight improvement.
Fast forward to 2022 and I've got the transmission out so I've got all the access I need to install the shifter bushings + carrier pin.
The only issue is that ECSTuning has zero instructions for this kit. I knew where the bushings needed to go, but there were 4+ ways I could orient the bushings and ECSTuning support had no answers.
I ended up posting on bimmerforums and polled the experts. I eventually settled on a configuration that utilized the new teflon bushings + a new oem rubber bushing. Follow along in the pics below:
